At the 77th Locarno Film Festival, Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) hosted the Cinema and Audiovisual Futures Conference, led by Professor Kevin B. Lee, head of the chair dedicated to the future of cinema and audiovisual arts. The conference explored how cinema can adapt and reflect the challenges of digital, social and environmental ‘survival’.

Kevin Lee, pioneering YouTube critic and now academic, highlighted the emerging role of video essays in film research. These videos, which combine academic analysis and audiovisual storytelling, are the focus of a research project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, to place Switzerland at the centre of this growing discipline. The challenge of peer review for video essays and their potential to revolutionise academic communication are among the main themes explored by Lee.
