The connection between the Mafia and women is a topic that is often overlooked. The theme will be tackled on Wednesday, 3 October at Aula polivalente of the East Campus in Lugano as part of an event organised by the Ticino Observatory on Organised Crime (O-TiCO).

Many women have fallen victim to criminal organisations. One only has to think of the Ticino side of the kidnapping and murder orchestrated by "ndrangheta", of 18-year-old Cristina Mazzotti from Como, which shook the whole of northern Italy in the summer of 1975. Even after almost fifty years, the legal proceedings are ongoing.

Conversely, many women have actively supported criminal gangs. In 1994, Libertina Rizzuto, the daughter, wife, and mother of three Cosa Nostra bosses, was arrested at a bank counter on the shores of Lake Ceresio after arriving from Canada. However, numerous women have also joined the fight against the Mafia, including citizens, civil servants, policewomen, magistrates, scholars, and journalists. Three of them will share their experiences at the fourth annual conference organised by O-TiCO.

The encounter will feature speeches by three guests: Alessandra Cerreti (Public Prosecutor Anti-Mafia District Directorate Milan), Ombretta Ingrascì (Researcher in Economic Sociology, University of Milan) and Alessia Truzzolillo (Journalist for LaC News24 and Ansa correspondent).

The round table will be introduced by Annamaria Astrologo (IDUSI Full Professor and academic Head of USI O-TiCO) and moderated by Francesco Lepori (CSR journalist and USI's O-TiCO Operations Manager).
