To help current students and recent graduates navigate the world of work, several USI Alumni shared their career paths and career story. Here the story of Filippo Testa, Investment Banking Analyst in REYL Intesa Sanpaolo in Geneva (CH). USI Degree: Master in Finance, 2022

How did you start your career?

During my second year of master in finance, I had the chance to participate in an exchange program at the University of St. Gallen. It was during this period that I discovered an internship opening at Reyl Intesa Sanpaolo through their Career Service. Eager to gain a deeper understanding of the bank's culture and gather insider tips, I proactively reached out to professionals within the organization via LinkedIn. To ensure I was well-prepared for the interview, I dedicated myself to studying IB manuals applying the various concepts I had learned throughout my master's program. After successfully navigating through multiple rounds of interviews, I was ultimately selected for the position.

Why did you choose a career at REYL Intesa Sanpaolo?

I opted for REYL Intesa Sanpaolo for three primary reasons: firstly, the ISP Group stands as the largest banking group in Italy, offering exceptional prospects for professional advancement and personal development. Secondly, I am deeply impressed by their remarkable history of successful deals and I foresee immense potential for expansion in the Swiss and broader European markets. Lastly, I highly value the company's culture within the team. We are not merely coworkers, but also friends.

What is your current role/duties?

As an Investment Banking Analyst, I have the privilege of covering various advisory services for a diverse range of clients. These services include providing guidance to both public and private companies, as well as financial sponsors, across a wide array of industry sectors and geographies. In my role, I am involved in a multitude of advisory services, including Merger & Acquisition transactions, Equity Capital Markets, restructuring, and private debt. On a day-to-day basis, my responsibilities encompass a range of tasks. These tasks include supporting the creation of meeting presentations, conducting data analysis, as well as engaging in financial modelling.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

My university education has provided me with a well-rounded skill set that has been crucial to my professional development. Alongside a strong foundation in accounting and finance, I have honed my interpersonal skills, allowing me to connect effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds in an international setting. However, the most valuable lesson I’ve gained is the importance of maintaining a curious and driven mindset - continuously seeking opportunities for both personal and professional growth.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

I would like to offer five key pieces of advice to students entering the job market:

  • Secure internships early: Begin pursuing internships as early as the first year of university. These experiences are invaluable for gaining practical skills, applying academic knowledge in real-world situations, and laying a strong foundation for future career success.
  • Stay informed about financial markets: Regularly read financial newspapers and industry publications to stay updated on market trends. This will help to understand the terminology used in the finance sector and gain insights into broader economic dynamics.
  • Make a great first impression: First impressions are critical, especially in interviews. Always be well-prepared by researching the company, understanding the role, and practicing common interview questions. This preparation will boost confidence and leave a lasting positive impression.
  • Build an authentic network early: Networking is essential for career growth. Learn to initiate professional connections, whether through cold calling or setting up informational interviews. A strong network can open doors to new opportunities and provide valuable guidance throughout a career.
  • Stay positive and resilient: Accept that rejections are a natural part of the job search process. Remember, a “no” does not define personal worth or abilities. Stay focused, maintain a positive attitude, and remain determined in pursuing goals despite setbacks.
