The European Journalism Observatory (EJO), an observatory of the Faculty of Communication, Culture and Society of Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), will be the scientific partner of the thirteenth edition of Glocal, the Festival of Journalism organised by Varesenews, scheduled from 7 to 10 November in Varese. The Lugano-based organisation will collaborate on the content proposal.

After participating last year with its director, Colin Porlezza, EJO will be on the Festival's side to define the programme. They will suggest content, panels, and speakers from their network of 14 research organisations across 11 European countries. EJO will also promote the content of the 2024 Glocal edition on its channels, expanding its reach to an international audience. The theme for the 2024 edition is "Questions": it reflects on the prompts given to artificial intelligence to provoke a broader consideration of how an industry that thrives on the ability to ask questions is evolving.

"The theme chosen for this edition of the Festival focuses on the impact of artificial intelligence on editorial offices. Our collaboration with the European Journalism Observatory expands Glocal's international reach and provides the opportunity to understand, analyse, and monitor how journalism is incorporating this tool into daily work," explains Marco Giovannelli, director of VareseNews and Festival Glocal.

"Artificial intelligence is playing a significant role in transforming journalism. It's important to consider how these technologies are being used and ensure that they are used responsibly. The Festival Glocal provides an excellent opportunity to explore the latest innovative trends in AI as it relates to local journalism and beyond," says Colin Porlezza, EJO Director.
