Internship and agreement documents

The Careers Service offers support to both USI students/recent graduates who wish to undertake an internship and companies

In the case of an internship in Switzerland for international students:

  • Permits: All companies located in Switzerland are allowed to hire international students with a “B” or “L” study permit (changing it for the duration of the work placement), as long as the internship is curricular. The Careers Service provides an internship certification letter to be submitted to the canton's Migration Office. The application to change the permit is made by the student.

In the case of an internship abroad:

  • Internship Agreement: If the law of the host country requires it, USI may enter into an agreement with the professional entity.
  • Scholarships: The Careers Service provides scholarships for students regularly enrolled in a USI programme, which can be used up to 12 months after graduation.

Please note that:

  • As a legal entity, Università della Svizzera italiana cannot assume the insurance burden. Therefore, if not covered by the professional entity, both work accident insurance and third-party liability insurance are the student's responsibility.
  • The company undertakes to provide the information required to obtain a visa and the necessary documentation to ensure that the internship is carried out in full compliance with the regulations of the host country. Visa and documentation formalities are the responsibility of the intern and the company, while the university has no liability in this regard.
  • For internships carried out in Switzerland, you can consult the "Guidelines - Criteria for defining an internship" provided by the Department of Finance and Economy (Canton Ticino).
  • For internships carried out in Switzerland: if earnings during the professional practice period exceed CHF 2’330 per calendar year and per employer, the latter is obliged to request the AVS number of the student hired.

For further information and support, USI's Career service is at the disposal of companies interested in collaborating.

Here you can find some example/facsimiles helpful for the internship:

    Remember that:

    • If the intern has already graduated, the USI can activate an internship agreement within 12 months from graduation and use it within one year from activation.
    • It is required to sign the internship agreement before the internship begins. USI will countersign the agreement within 7-10 days.
    • Students with non-Swiss and non-EU nationality with a B Student Permit can work in Switzerland after 6 months from their arrival (15 hours a week /full time during the summer months), after the modification of their permit. See the Ordinanza sull’ammissione, il soggiorno e l’attività lucrativa (OASA).
