Abstract:
Diversity is fundamental for the design of technology that serves people. In the talk, I will share experiences from three projects related to diversity and mobile sensing, involving local youth in Mexico documenting their urban environment; Swiss citizens sharing their experiences during the covid-19 confinement through a citizen science initiative; and university students in countries across Europe, Asia, and Latin America describing their daily activities. I will highlight three principles that guided the research in these projects: putting people at the center, building community, and embracing the complexities of multidisciplinary work.

Biography:
Daniel Gatica-Perez directs the Social Computing Group at Idiap and is a professor at EPFL with the School of Engineering and the College of Humanities. He studies how people and technology interface in everyday life. His current research integrates mobile crowdsensing, social media, and citizen science to support cities, public health, and the environment.
