To help current students and recent graduates navigate the world of work, several USI Alumni shared their career paths and career story. Here the story of Aron Dalle Pezze, Fullstack Developer at immopac in Agno (CH). USI Degrees: Master in Informatics, 2023 and Bachelor in Informatics, 2021.

How did you start your career?

After finishing the Master, I started looking for a job as a Frontend Developer in Ticino. All the companies to whom I sent my CV turned me down without even an interview, mostly because of my lack of professional experience, except for one: immopac ag called me for an interview, as they were interested in my profile and my Master Thesis. After that first interview, I started a trial period working with them, after which I got employed permanently.

Why did you choose a career at immopac?

The first reason was because they've been the only ones in Ticino to show interested towards me and give me a chance to show my skills. After that, I decided to remain because I like the small team in Agno and I enjoy the general working environment and policies.

What is your current role/duties?

Although I work as Fullstack developer, I mainly focus on helping in designing and developing the UI of immopac applications, both in terms of new feature and refactoring current ones.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

Through the Master of Science in Informatics, there is the chance to still explore and study a variety of different topic without going extremely deep in a single one, which I believe to be a good thing in a field as wide as Computer Science. Other than that, having pursued both the Bachelor and the Master at USI, I had the chance to do all my university studies in english, which allowed me to get to know the language much more, especially on a technical level, and to get used to it, which is fundamental in this field. Lastly, the high amount of practical assignment is another key elements that allows to significantly increase the proficiency of the student in the field.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

Flexibility in programming languages above all. Being capable of learning new programming languages or libraries when in need allows for easily adapt to the requirements of the field when looking for a job, or to the needs of your employer when new technologies are being introduced. Other than that, having learned how to use Git has also been fundamental, as it is an important standard platform for developers.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

For someone who is still studying or choosing a Master, being able to pair it with a part-time job in the field is a really useful aspect. But for those that have not been able to do so, the more they broaden their horizons, the easier it wil be to find a good job. As I mentioned, being able to find a job in Ticino without any experience is not easy, but if one accepts to go elsewhere in Switzerland or even in another country, there will be much more opportunities.

As a personal advice, when looking for a job, it is important not to underestimate yourself. You should not accept a job in a condition you wouldn't like just in order to get a start in the field no matter how what. With a Master in Informatics at USI you will be very capable in whatever your chosen path will be, and you will be able to make up for professional experience in no time as soon as you'll get started, so don't rush it and don't let negative or inappropriate answers from companies let you down.
