Nicole De Monti, a 2024 graduate of the Master in Management and Informatics 2024, participated as a mentee in the 5th edition of the BPW-USI Professional Mentoring Programme 23-24.

Here is her testimonial:

How did you decide to participate in the mentoring programme and what were your initial expectations before starting the programme?
I decided to participate on the advice of a partner who had participated the previous year. I was unclear about what mentoring was: after getting to know the programme, my expectations were mainly to have someone with whom I could share doubts related to the transition period from university to the working world.

How has the mentoring programme influenced your career or course of study?
On the one hand, it allowed me to better understand how to move in the working world, having the point of view of a professional with a lot of experience behind me. On the other hand, it gave me concrete opportunities to develop fundamental knowledge for the writing of my master's thesis. The mentoring course can indeed be adapted to the preferences and needs of mentees, including practical tools such as time management and organisation techniques, strategies for coping with job interviews, resources and access to specific courses, as needed.

Have there been changes in your way of thinking or coping thanks to mentoring?
During the last semester, it is normal to feel great anxiety when faced with the idea of having to write a thesis, study for exams and in the meantime find a job. My mentor was a source of inspiration and support that made me feel less alone in this world, having someone to ask. She also gave me the drive not to settle for just any job opportunity, but to look for something I liked and found stimulating.

How would you describe your relationship with your mentor?
My mentor has always been a very ‘fan’ of my path and attitude, and this positivity has given me a boost of confidence. Our meetings have been spaces for sharing and communication, and I know that I can still count on her support if I need it, which is crucial for me as I have no access to other mentors. Behind the creation of mentor-mentee pairs there is an effort to get the best out of the mentoring process, so our relationship has been facilitated by the fact that we have several things in common.

Would you recommend participating in the programme? If yes, what advice would you give to someone who is about to start a mentoring course?
I would absolutely recommend taking part, as it is a free opportunity to assimilate knowledge from experienced women who put themselves on the line for our benefit. Before or during the first meeting, I would advise mentees to reflect on the things that create the most anxiety or insecurity, or that they would like to focus on, so that they can start the journey with clear goals. Participating in this programme not only enriches both parties, but also gives us female students the opportunity to build important relationships for the future. Don't be afraid to get involved: the support you receive can make all the difference in your path.
